  • 28 regional airports will undergo upgrade works and maintenance
  • Largest grant to Kununurra airport ($1.61million) for studies, resurfacing and resealing the runway

Twenty-eight regional airports, stretching from the Kimberley’s Mitchell Plateau to Eucla at the South Australian border, will benefit from $4million in Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS) grants.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the grants, funded through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program, helped develop vital regional airport infrastructure and would improve air services throughout the State.

“The airport works include runway lights for Royal Flying Doctor landings, upgrades and technical studies,” Mr Buswell said.

“These infrastructure upgrades and maintenance will enable improved access for communities and provide safer emergency evacuations, as well as greater tourism opportunities for the regions.”

From 2008-09 to 2012-13, 150 projects received $29million in RADS grants, in support of projects valued at about $67million.

The largest grant for the 2013-15 round went to Kununurra airport ($1.61million) for resurfacing and resealing the runway, necessary to maintain the airport’s current operational capability.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the introduction of the Royalties for Regions funding to RADS in 2008 had enabled a wider scope of projects to be eligible for funding.

“The funding was committed to building stronger regional communities, especially for people living in remote areas,” Mr Grylls said.

“Regional airports will continue to play a vital part in supporting businesses, the community and tourism in our State.”
