The State Government today announced the successful completion of the first Low Emissions Energy Development (LEED) Fund project - a prototype harvester for the State’s developing mallee industry.

Environment Minister Bill Marmion said $1.5million from the LEED fund had been provided to the Future Farm Industries Cooperative Research Centre for the innovative project.

“Mallee plantings provide Western Australian farmers with the revegetation part of a salinity management package, protection for livestock and a potential drought-tolerant perennial crop,” Mr Marmion said.

“The development of this prototype harvester opens the way to a new generation of woody-crop harvesters that will help biomass become a competitive form of renewable energy.

“Projects like this highlight the importance of the LEED Fund, which was set up to support the development of new, low emission technologies and renewable energy supplies to reduce the State’s carbon footprint.”

Energy Minister Peter Collier said the project exemplified Australian business’ contribution to emissions-reducing energy technologies and the significant commercial and environmental benefits that could be achieved.

“This funding has supported the building and testing of this prototype harvester, which has a design requirement to harvest 20 tonnes per hour. Recent testing showed it could sustain up to 38 tonnes per hour,” Mr Collier said.

The potential use of mallee chips has attracted strong interest from companies, including Airbus, General Electric and Virgin Australia, which had joined a consortium to develop a sustainable jet fuel from biomass industry.
