More jobs for West Australians

Posted On January 18, 2013

Hon Simon O'Brien MLC

  • Local firm wins multimillion contract
  • WA companies win more than $30.3billion in resource contracts
  • Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien yesterday visited another Western Australian company to benefit from the State Government’s proactive approach to helping local companies secure work on major resource projects.

Malaga-based engineering company Georgiou Precast has recently won a multi-million dollar contract to provide jacking pipe segments to be used on the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project.

“More than 4,000 jobs have been created since the State Government launched the Local Industry Participation framework in July 2011,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The Georgiou Precast contract will mean another 10 jobs for WA workers.

“This is a great example of how a local company has successfully competed against international competition by making sure they fully understood the customer’s requirements.

“The company has also invested heavily in training and its strong focus on worker safety made them even more competitive.

“This is only one of the more than $30.3billion of contracts which have gone to local firms since this Government launched the Local Industry Participation Framework.

“The bottom line is that this has resulted in tens of thousands of jobs for West Australians, and is a major reason why we have the lowest unemployment rate in Australia, a country with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world.”

The Wheatstone Project has already committed more than $8billion to Australian goods and services.
