Rail infrastructure expansion for Fremantle Port

Posted On October 23, 2013

Hon Troy Buswell BEc MLA

Fremantle Port is set to expand its rail infrastructure, reducing the growth of port-related truck traffic.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, and Western Australian Transport Minister, Troy Buswell, today announced that the major contract for the extension of the North Quay Rail Terminal had been awarded to Australian engineering and construction company York Civil.

Mr Truss said the expansion of rail infrastructure at the North Quay Rail Terminal, which services Fremantle Port, will help reduce the growth of port-related truck traffic by increasing rail capacity.

“Efficient rail infrastructure to improve national productivity is a high priority for the Australian Government,” Mr Truss said.

“This $31million project is funded by the Australian ($18.6million) and Western Australian ($12.4million) governments.

“It is designed to increase capacity, supply chain efficiency and productivity by extending the existing rail terminal from 400 metres to 690 metres.

“In turn, this will improve access for container transfer and enable shorter turnaround times, making rail more competitive as a means of transporting containers to and from this busy port.”

Mr Buswell said the Western Australian Government’s contribution to developing Fremantle Port’s rail infrastructure was part of a suite of strategies aimed at maximising the use of the rail system for container trade.

“From just two per cent in 2002, rail now has a 14 per cent share of the container movements to and from the port and the volume of containers currently on rail reduces truck movements by some 72,000 trips annually,” Mr Buswell said.

The project is due for completion by mid-2014.
